Life Cycle Assessment of CO2 Emissions of Online Music and Videos Streaming in Japan

In this study, we analyzed the CO2 emissions of online music and video streaming services, as one digital contents, in Japan using life cycle assessment. As a system boundary streaming, processes such data center construction server manufacturing, usage communication networks internet technology devices (personal computers (PCs) smartphones), disposal centers servers were considered. Data collected statistical surveys, per 1 MB volume calculated. One results revealed that lifecycle listening to PCs smartphones 5.88 × 10−4 1.43 kg-CO2/MB, respectively. The overall for domestic services 2019 was 921 thousand t-CO2. Online accounted 87.7% total emissions, which corresponded approximately 0.23% derived from electric power generation.
